The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is one of Lisbon's most prestigious cultural institutions, created from the personal collection of the Armenian philanthropist Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian.
Opened in 1969, it brings together artworks from different periods and regions, from Ancient Egypt to twentieth century European art, reflecting the collector's refined taste. Divided between the Founder's Collection and the Modern Collection, the museum has become an international reference for the quality of its holdings and for the harmonious way it integrates art, architecture and nature.
Surrounded by extensive gardens designed by landscape architects Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Viana Barreto as a true refuge in the heart of the city, the outdoor areas of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation invite leisurely walks among lakes, shaded paths and quiet resting spots. The gardens remain open until 9 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy their tranquil atmosphere in the late afternoon.
Just a few steps from the main building, designed by architects Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid and Ruy Athouguia, stands the renovated Centre for Modern Art, a hub dedicated to contemporary Portuguese and international art. With new galleries, expanded spaces and an updated programme, the CAM asserts itself as a vibrant venue celebrating modern creativity and artistic diversity.
