An 18th-century chapel where fado is sung by candlelight and heritage is savoured at the table.
Discover the soul of fado in a venue where tradition lives on. Originally founded as an academy,
Housed within a former 18th-century Royal Chapel in the heart of Alfama, Mesa de Frades is one of Lisbon’s most extraordinary venues. Preserving its original tile panels following the 1755 earthquake, it carries forward an unbroken fado tradition that dates back to the early 20th century.
Without a stage to divide the performer from the audience, fado unfolds right between the tables in an atmosphere of absolute silence and intimacy. Owned by master guitarist Pedro de Castro, the house displays a living museum of historical instruments while hosting exceptional voices from across generations. The experience is completed by a set menu of traditional Portuguese cuisine paired with fine national wines, turning every evening into an unforgettable encounter with the soul of Lisbon.
