Despite the name, the park was initially surrounded by a high wall. The walls were demolished later and the walk was open for everyone. It was revamped in the 1830s and 1840s by architect and was introduced a new arrangement of the plants as well as fountains, a waterfall and statues. It also includes a memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War. Although many of the old buildings were torn down to build office buildings, hotels and shopping centers, some of the original mansions were preserved, including the neoclassical Tívoli cinema. The great tree-lined avenue that follows the style of the Champs Elysees in Paris became a center of courtships, festivities and demonstrations.
